Bettejean S. Hill(1922 - 2014)

Bettejean S. Hill
October 3, 1922 - April 24, 2014
Resident of Danville
Bettejean Hill, 91, passed away April 24, 2014 at her home in Danville, California. She had a good and long life as a wife, mother, grandma, great grandma, and teacher.
Born and raised in Oakland CA, Bettejean attended high school there and began her studies at UC Berkeley before WWII interrupted her plans. She married Ernest Hill in March 1942 and traveled with him to his training posts in Michigan, Connecticut and Georgia before he left for the South Pacific. Bette returned to Oakland and supported herself and her infant son working as a chemist until Ernie returned. Later, she was able to complete her education and received a teaching certificate from San Jose State. She frequently talked of several teachers who were particularly inspiring to her and brought this passion and commitment to her work as a teacher in the San Ramon School district for 22 years, where she was also a leader in the Education Association.
Bette lived a full, active life. With Ernie, she raised three boys and then welcomed three daughters-in-law and grandchildren into the family. The family will remember her enthusiasm for hiking, ski trips, backpacking, Hawaii, gardening, cooking, reading and playing bridge.
Bette was ahead of her time as a strong, intelligent, and outspoken advocate, particularly for women. She volunteered with AAUW to expose young women to science and volunteered with women experiencing breast cancer.
Bettejean is survived by her husband of 72 years, Ernest, sons Eric and Steve, daughters-in-law Beverly, Sandy and Christine, six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and seven nieces and nephews. Bettejean was preceded in death by a son, Larry and a sister, Marilou.
Bettejean requested that there be no funeral or memorial service. The family thanks Gentiva Hospice and Emeritus at Diablo Lodge for the excellent care they provided Bette. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Bettejean Hill Scholarship, c/o San Jose State University, One Washington Square, San Jose, CA 95192.
