Dean Baker

Dean Lee Baker 11-06-1926 to 1-16-2013 Resident of El Sobrante Dean passed away at home on January 16, 2013 with his wife Arlene by his side. In 1944, Dean left his Midwest home of Council Bluffs, Iowa, to join the Navy. During his 20 years in the Navy, including a stop in Vallejo to meet and marry his sweetheart Arlene, he served aboard tugboats in Japan, aircraft carriers, transports and submarines. He had duty in Kodiak, Alaska, and NROTC instructor's duty at UC Berkeley. He ended his naval career as a Chief Quartermaster aboard the FBM submarine USS Ethan Allen in 1964. After many years as a jack-of-all-trades in Iowa and then in California - hog farmer, construction worker, ironworker, Contra Costa County Animal Services Officer - he retired again, in El Sobrante, to his real love, gardening in his backyard. He also volunteered for many years with West Contra Costa County Meals on Wheels and was active in his church, El Sobrante United Methodist Church, and in CCCREA Retirement Group, Mare Island Submarine Group, Bay Cities Masons and VFW Post 8114. Dean leaves behind his loving wife of 61 years Arlene and son Dennis. Their son Kevin predeceased him in 1974. His family wishes to extend a special thanks to Vitas Hospice care and his wonderful caretaker, Nelly Hernandez, and nurse, LaVerne Hammock. No services were held; burial at sea is planned at a later time. Gifts in Dean's memory can be sent to WCCC Meals on Wheels, Vitas of Walnut Creek or El Sobrante Methodist Church.
