Ellen M. Elster
Mar. 14, 1944-Mar. 12, 2014
Resident of Martinez
Ellen passed away unexpectedly on the morning of March 12, just two days shy of her 70th birthday, at Kaiser Hospital, Walnut Creek. She had fought an often difficult but valiant battle with a rare lung disease for a very long time.
Ellen was born in Missouri to Charles Irven and Geraldine Schrimsher. She and her brother Bill Schrimsher were raised there, and she followed her family's uniquely strong interest in public education and earned her bachelor's degree from Central Missouri State University.
She moved out West and found her loving husband, Leland Elster in Fresno, CA where she began teaching Special Education. After they married in 1973, Lee & Ellen then moved to the Bay Area where Ellen continued teaching Special Ed and then was Director of the CCCOE ROP (Regional Occupation Program).
Ellen earned her Master's Degree in Education from Cal-State Hayward and pursued her career in education as an administrator at the Contra Costa County Office of Education where she later became Deputy Superintendent. Ellen loved her work, her colleagues in education and her many, many friends. After retiring in 2009, she missed her friends and interest in education so much, she ran for the CCC Board of Education and was elected to the board in 2010. She was currently serving as President of the Board.
Ellen and Lee became the proud parents of their daughter, Elizabeth, on her very own birthday in 1981. They joyously shared and celebrated the same birthday for almost 33 years. Ellen is survived by her husband, Lee, her daughter, Elizabeth and her husband Kenneth Porterfield of Texas, and grandson, Jacob Lee, her brother Bill Schrimsher of Missouri, her brother-in-law Wayne Elster of Indio, and many cousins in Missouri. She passionately loved her grandson and his family.
Ellen was an avid sports fan, and cheered the Oakland A's and Raider's with all her heart. She loved reading and novels; she loved our kitties, and of course she loved Martini's--- shaken, not stirred. Her wit and sense of humor was renown.
Ellen and Lee owe so much gratitude and thanks to Eden Limon her friend and caregiver of two years.
Miss Ellen: "we love you to the moon and back".
A Memorial Service and burial will be held at 10:00am Thursday, March 20 at the Oakmont Memorial Park, 2099 Reliez Valley Road, Lafayette, CA.
