Gene was born in Burley, ID and grew up in Long Beach, CA. He graduated from University of California, Berkeley, BA Business Administration, then Stanford, Masters, Business Administration. Upon graduation, Gene received his Naval Commission and attended War College (Harvard) in preparation for WWII
. During his naval service, he met WAVE officer Mary (Ranney) Davis at the Oakland Supply Center while performing an audit. They married (Philadelphia, PA) in 1948. He graduated from the Naval War College in Providence RI 1959. Gene served with distinction for 22 years, Naval Supply Core, Commander. He had an engaging personality and enjoyed entertaining in many ports of call including Guam, Virginia Beach, VA, Pentagon, Warner Robbins, GA, and Pearl Harbor HI. Post military service, Gene became Distribution Systems Mgr., Safeway Stores Inc., and settled down in Orinda CA. He was instrumental in the design and implementation of the SOP/WIR automated distribution system (Store Order Processing/Warehouse Inventory Replenishment) and the creation of 'Central' computer data processing that helped Safeway to grow and prosper. He retired from Safeway at 65, in 1985. Gene enjoyed many friendships inside and outside of work. He was an avid golfer and board member at Contra Costa County Club. He enjoyed playing bridge in Rossmoor and with SIR's (Sons in Retirement). He always had a project going on; building a receiver and amplifier (Dana Kit), building a kayak (Foldboat) or building a doll house. In his later years he was active in genealogy, attending many family reunions, sharing insights, photographs and stories. His wife of 64 years, Mary, predeceased him by a month. He will be forever cherished by son John Gould of Bountiful UT, daughter Caroline Rees of Fair Oaks CA, son-in law Norm Rees, grandchildren Lea Webb and Brian Rees, grandson-in-law Andy Webb and great grandson Zach. As he requested his service will be private.
