Gertrude Joy Plumley
1928 - 2013
Resident of Concord
Joy passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 16. She was born and raised in Oakland, CA to Charles Dorothy Consterdine. Joy graduated from UC Berkeley in 1950 and married her sweetheart, Walt Plumley. They settled in Concord to raise their family. She was an amazing cook and nothing pleased her more than having the family gathered around the dining room table for birthdays and holiday dinners. She always remembered birthdays with a handmade card.
Joy was an elementary school teacher until retirement. Once retired, she became very active with the Concord United Methodist Women, serving as president for 5 years. Her organizing and leadership skills guided the organization in many activities and charitable works. She also enjoyed learning new things including web design for the church website and taking quilting classes with her daughters.
Preceded in death by her husband Walt and brother Jack, Joy is survived by her sister, Jan, her three children, Sue Falkowski, Lynn Fisher (Steve) and Gary (Sue), twelve lovely grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held February 16, 11 am at the Concord United Methodist Church, 1645 West St. A reception will follow. Donations in Joy's name can be made to Heifer International or Concord United Methodist Church.
