Joe O. Toland

Joe O. Toland
March 26, 1927 - Feb. 9, 2014
Resident of Pleasanton
Longtime Pleasanton resident, Joe O. Toland, passed on to be with his sweet wife, Verretta Jensen Toland on Sunday, February 9, 2014, in Walnut Creek, CA.
Joe was a one-of-a-kind, larger than life powerhouse born to Alfred Conrad Toland and Pearle Williams on March 26, 1927 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He fibbed about his age so he could join the Army and serve his country during World War II. When he returned, he took advantage of college and finished early with honors, taking over the affairs of his father and brother who had been killed in a tragic airplane accident.
He sought out just the right mate and worked hard to deserve her in every way. They were married in Utah at the Logan Temple. They quickly had six children who were his pride and joy. Verretta was his sweetheart for 62 years and they were inseparable until her death last year.
From the beginning of his working career Joe was highly admired as an outstanding writer and editor, know by his co-workers as "Mr. Personality" and "Tiger T". He was an award winning pool salesman and had a knack for designing them, starting his own business, Carefree Toland Pools in 1975. Community leaders respected his opinions and he was surrounded by many loyal, outstanding friends. His quick wit and upbeat outlook on life made his presence something to be desired.
He mentored his nephew in the pool business, championed his fatherless little sister and was a faithful, vigilant son, sending his widowed mother enough money every month for her to be able to live worry-free. He brought up his children to believe in themselves and be successful. He and Verretta, served many years at the local prison teaching and served a two year mission at the Oakland Family Search Library. He had a passion for Golf and marshaled at the Pleasanton Golf Course.
He will be lovingly missed by his sister, Karla Rosenlund (Gene), son, Gary Toland (Karan), daughter, Debbie Peck (Keith Brown), son, Brad Toland, daughter, Joetta Toland, son, James Toland-Yeh (Jimmy), son, Scott Toland (Angie). He also leaves behind 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank friend and caregiver, Tea Ika, for her compassion, love and dedication the last few years.
Funeral service will be this Saturday, Feb. 15th, at The Church of Latter Day Saints, 3574 Vineyard Ave, Pleasanton, CA at 10am. Graveside Service to follow at Pleasanton Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 5780 Sunol Blvd., Pleasanton.
