LR "Hawk" Hawkins(1928 - 2014)

LR Hawkins
Formerly of Lafayette
LR "Hawk" Hawkins passed away at his home with his family by his bedside on April 6, 2014. He was 85 years of age. LR was born to "JB" and Elsie Hawkins in Trion, GA, Dec. 1, 1928. He was predeceased by his brother Wayne, sister Sharon, and both of his parents.
LR lived in Lafayette for 57+ years and 6 years in Auburn. He enlisted in the US Navy and toured on several Subs: The USS Essex (sea plane Tender), the USS Gardiner's Bay, and the USS Parche.
While stationed in Alameda, LR met his wife-to-be, Leah Bono. On March 4, 2014, they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. Following his service, LR was honorably discharged.
LR went on to spend 39 years with Pacific Bell, as a lineman and installer. He was a bigger than life telephone man, who supported many causes. His beard drove management to the brink. However, as he said: "if Alexander Graham Bell had a beard, why not I?!" He was a proud member of CWA Local 9415, retiring in July of 1990. He wanted so much to attend the last reunion, but an accident that prevented him from making an appearance.
LR and Leah enjoyed many visits to their favorite Hawaiian Islands, as well as camping and exploring the great out-doors with their family. LR also had a lifelong passion for gardening.
He leaves behind his wife Leah, daughter Cindy, son Todd, and grandson Scott, and Vinny, his bullmastiff, all of whom loved him greatly.
Thank you Vitas-Hospice, you were our strength during the past few weeks. Here's to one last climb Hawk!
LR's service will be Mon, 4/14, 1pm, at Holy Angels/St. Joseph Cemetery, 2540 Church Ln., San Pablo.
