Mary Viola "Vi" Murphy
Resident of Pleasant Hill
Mary Viola "Vi" Murphy passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on April 14, 2013. Her vibrant spirit shined through until the end, and her family is comforted by the many memories of love, laughter, and joy she brought to all who knew her over the course of her 93 years.
Vi was born in White Elm, Iowa on September 28, 1919. Her family moved to Corning, California, before she trained as a nurse at San Francisco's St. Joseph's Hospital. It was there she met her future husband, Vincent "Vin" Murphy, when she threw him off the ward for being too noisy at a friend's bedside. Vin proceeded to pursue her until they were married.
Vi and Vin raised their two children, John and Peggy, in Broadmoor. Vi was very involved with her kids, serving as President of the Holy Angels Parents Club and the Riordan Parents Club. She was also a successful realtor and a Police Matron before retiring to Pleasant Hill. While there she became an active member of Christ the King Church, managing the church hall, serving as a longtime member of the Altar Society, and forging many lasting friendships before "retiring" at 88 years old.
Vi was known for both her green thumb and her love of animals—she could often be found in her extensive garden or tempting a dog with a treat tucked away in her purse. She was also known for her cooking and baking, and many friends and neighbors benefited from her homemade goodies, especially her famous pomegranate jelly. But she was best known for her great love of friends and family, and was happiest at family events, holiday celebrations, and brunches with her "Over the Hill Gang."
Vi was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Vincent Murphy, and her grandson, Brendan Keith Murphy. She is survived by her son John (Jack) Murphy and wife Luisa, and daughter Peggy Burton and husband Steve. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Julie Baker and husband Chris, Katie Landini and husband Joe, Megan Murphy, and Brian Burton, along with her great-grandson, Dominic Landini, her pride and joy.
A funeral mass will take place at Christ the King Church in Pleasant Hill on Friday, 4/19/13, at 12:45 pm, to be followed by a graveside burial at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Lafayette, and then a reception at the church hall. A rosary will also be held at Christ the King Church on Thursday, 4/18/13, at 7pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Vi's memory to the Christ the King St. Vincent de Paul Society.
