Raymond Spellacy

Raymond Bernard Spellacy April 29, 1929- June 15, 2013 Resident of Pinole Raymond Bernard Spellacy of Pinole, California, passed away surrounded by his family on June 15, 2013. Raymond (Ray) was born in San Francisco, California, to Gertrude and Raymond Spellacy on April 29, 1929. He attended St. Ignatius College Preparatory School in San Francisco and graduated in 1947. He began his college career at the University of California, Berkeley, and later attended the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy in Laramie, Wyoming, where he graduated in 1952. While attending school in Laramie a friend set him up on a blind date with Dorothy Rudisill, who worked in the administration department at the University. The two were married in San Francisco in 1951 and lived in Contra Costa County since 1956, moving to Pinole in 1963. Together with Dorothy he opened Pinole Valley Pharmacy in 1960, and operated the store for nearly 30 years. For many years Ray and Dorothy owned a cabin at Pinecrest, where Ray spent many summers enjoying the Sierras, and where he and Dorothy developed a wide circle of friends. After retirement from his Pharmacist career Ray began collecting figurines illustrating the Charles Dickens era of English history. He was active in Club 56, an East Bay association of like-minded collectors that gathers monthly to share their passion. He had great fun staging and showing his collection, which took over several rooms of his home. Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Spellacy, a sister, Mary Ann Jones, daughter Kathleen Spellacy, and his parents. He is survived by daughters Linda Scott (Bryan), Karen Kendall (Gary), Sharon Russell and son Larry Spellacy, grandchildren Justine Baldacci (Matthew), Christopher Scott (Alexandra), Kristina Jenson (Ryan) and Courtney Kendall, and one great-grandchild, Ethan Jensen. Ray was active in St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the California Pharmacists Association, serving as President of the Contra Costa County Chapter in 1972. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 11AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 837 Tennent Ave., in Pinole. A reception in Ray's honor will follow. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, please make a donation to the Lymphoma Research Foundation of New York, New York.
