Shayne Marie Coppedge
December 22, 1980 - July 3, 2013
Resident of Santa Cruz
Shayne Marie Coppedge was taken from us suddenly and unexpectedly on the morning of July 3, 2013. Her unforeseen death was caused by a pulmonary embolism.
Shayne loved life and had an unquenchable curiosity about everything. She was fascinated with biology and loved nature. She wanted to be outdoors whenever possible; going on road trips, taking a walk in a redwood forest or spending a day at the beach. Shayne would always be the one to notice and appreciate the beauty in this world. "Come outside and look at the moon," she would say, or "check out this cool fungus growing on this log." She never missed a moment of beauty.
Born in Walnut Creek, California, Shayne was a free spirit and unbelievably intelligent. She graduated from Northgate High School and went on to become a legal secretary. After many years in the legal world, she longed to do something more meaningful. She decided to go to college and study biology, with the goal of becoming a field biologist or working in conservation. She graduated from UC Santa Cruz just two weeks before her death. She was so happy, and we were all so proud of her.
Shayne was loving and kindhearted, the sort of person that random strangers found themselves pouring out their life stories to. She didn't judge anyone. She loved her family and friends with a steadfast ferocity. Truly a heart of gold.
Shayne was an artist and loved painting and many other art forms. She was also an incredibly talented writer, writing poetry that would make you stop and wonder how such emotion could possibly be captured and placed on a page. She was a gourmet cook, and would happily spend all day in the kitchen, creating amazing meals with great care and attention to detail. She prepared many a feast for her family and friends. It filled her with joy to make and share a meal with those she loved.
Music, books, and movies were passions for Shayne. She loved many different kinds of music, old and new, and especially enjoyed attending live music performances with her friends. It seemed that she remembered the lyrics from every song she ever heard, a trait that she shared with her sister. Seeing the two of them spontaneously break out into a random song and sing it together was priceless. She could also flawlessly quote lines from her favorite movies, and always had a perfect quote for any moment.
Shayne leaves a trail of hearts aching in missing her smile and conversations. She is survived by her parents, Ken & Robyn Coppedge, her sister, Cana Jenkins, and future brother-in-law Aram Gutowski. Aunts and Uncles include Gregg & Jody Snider, Leslie & Jerry Kashiwada, Allyn Fisher, Christine Coppedge, and Steve Hartman. Cousins include David Staab, Miriam Kashiwada, Brittany & Casondra Coppedge, and Zachary & Lucas Smith. She is survived by grandparents Charlotte Snider, Joe & Diane Deemer, Dick Snider & Julie Magilen, and Jean Deemer. Shayne was also an "honorary member" of the Martin family (Jim, Karolyn, Danny, Tracy, Amy, and Sofia).
We all love you so very much Shaynela. We have gained and learned things from you in your short life that we will carry in our hearts and minds forever. Rest in peace. A Memorial service will be held on Monday, July 15, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. in the Brazilian Room, Wildcat Canyon Road at Shasta Road, in Tilden Park, Berkeley. The memorial will be open to all who knew and loved Shayne.
