Sister Thomasine McMahon

Sister Thomasine McMahon, SNJM
Resident of Campbell
Sister Thomasine McMahon (Mary Veronica McMahon) entered the fullness of life on February 20, 2014. She was 91 years old and celebrated 71 years of religious profession as a Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary.
Sister Thomasine was in elementary education for 23 years, mostly in Northern California - including Sacred Heart (Oakland), St. Mary (Oakland), Our Lady of Lourdes (Oakland) and St. Theresa (Oakland). She had a one year sojourn to both Tampa and Seattle as an "exchange sister". Working with a housing project in Tampa, Sister Thomasine became acutely aware of lonely, older people. This experience both haunted and inspired her to ministry with the elderly at Saint Francis de Sales for eight years and one year in Our Lady of Grace.
After leaving this ministry, she received Chaplaincy training which lead her to work at Brookside Hospital and then later at Alta Bates Hospital where on occasion, babies died with little chance for a decent burial. With her characteristic compassion and resourcefulness she found ways to provide burials for these babies. Sister Thomasine wanted us to remember that a great privilege of her life was her work with Kairos (Cursillo adapted for prison ministry).
We remember Sister Thomasine's generosity of spirit, her big heart and her commitment throughout her life to the underserved. We celebrate her love of family, the hundreds of corsages she made for sisters' jubilees and her love of cooking food for all kinds of groups.
Sister Thomasine is survived by her brother, Thomas McMahon (Elaine), as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Sister Thomasine's Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Convent of the Holy Names, Los Gatos.
Gifts in Sister's memory may be made to the Ministry Fund, Sisters of the Holy Names, P.O. Box 907, Los Gatos, CA 95031.
