Violeta Obial Oncena (Iné, Mamachay) passed away on Wednesday after a valiant battle with leukemia. She touched many lives with her kind spirit and positive outlook on life.
Violeta was born in Baliwag, Bulacan, Philippines. She participated in competitive swimming in high school and college. She graduated from the University of the East in Manila, Philippines with a degree of Doctor of Dental Medicine and passed the subsequent board exams. She and her family immigrated to the United States in 1968 where they lived in Chicago, Illinois. She became a U.S. citizen six years later. She and her family moved to Pittsburg in 1977. She went back to school in 1985 and received her LVN license in 1986.
She was a devoted catholic and very dedicated to her parish where she was a eucharistic minister, a catechism teacher, a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, the Altars Guild and a youth ministry leader. She most enjoyed her favorite job as a full time Mamachay (Grandma). Her favorite pastime was taking photos of everyone at every event, documenting life.
Violeta is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Danilo; and children Ed Oncena (Carleen), Joe Oncena, Frances Santelises (Jerry), Daniel Oncena (Claudia); and seven grandchildren Frankie, Victoria, Jonathan, Jazmine, Mohamed, Angel, and Salma. She is also survived by her brothers Danilo Amigleo, Jose Obial Jr., and sister Imelda Obial San Andres. She was preceded in death by her son Fidel Oncena. Her loving, compassionate nature and beautiful smile will be missed by many.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Tuesday May 6, 2014 from 4:00 to 8:00pm with a vigil at 6:00pm at the Pittsburg Funeral Chapel. Funeral liturgy Wednesday May 7, 2014 at 10:00am at Our Lady Queen of the World Church. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to Our Lady Queen of the World Church 3155 Winterbrook Dr., Bay Point, Ca 94565.
