Virgil Calisesi

Virgil Calisesi Jul. 16, 1920 - Sept. 5, 2013 Resident of Oakley Virgil Calisesi was born in Portsmouth New Hampshire, on July 16, 1920. He passed away on September 5, 2013. Virgil was the youngest of three sons to Mauro and Claudia Calisesi. His family came to Antioch to join his mother's brother and two sisters in 1928, who had been living in Antioch for some time. Growing up in the wonderful, small town of Antioch, the river was the playground for everyone in the summer and hunting in the foothills in the fall and spring. In his junior and senior years of high school, he was the night mechanic at Christensen's Garage and Machine Shop. It was then he found his love for working on cars. In 1938 he graduated from Antioch High School. He then went to work for Fibreboard as a welder in the maintenance department. In 1941 he married his high school sweetheart Norma Jean Rossi: their marriage was comparable to none. They were married two months shy of 67 years. Also in 1941, he joined the United States Navy. He served his country for three years and five months. In that time he became one of the youngest persons in the Navy to be given the title of, Chief Petty Officer in the Pacific Theater. In 1949, he and Norma bought a small almond orchard in the town of Oakley. Today it is one of the oldest family owned farms in Oakley. It was there they had a daughter Virgilia (Jill) and son Robert. Virgil's love and passion for his family flourished as the years passed. Virgil is survived by his son Robert and grandson John Joseph Jr, he also leaves son-in-law John Joseph Sr.: beloved granddaughter Kimberly Calisesi, great-grand-daughter Kylie Joseph and granddaughter-in-law Leah Joseph. He was also very thankful and appreciative to have a loving caregiver Charles. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Norma Calisesi and their unforgettable daughter (Peach) Virgilia (Jill) Joseph. Services will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel on September 13, 2013 at 11 am. 2200 E 18th Street, Antioch (925) 757-0658
