Walter passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 91. Walter was born in San Pablo, California and lived there all his life. He served in the US Army from 1942-1945, and came back to San Pablo to work as a Deputy Sherriff for the Sheriff's Department. He later worked as a patrolman for the City of San Pablo after it incorporated in 1948, and in 1949 was named Police Chief of San Pablo. He served 28 years as Police Chief until his retirement in 1977, and is still affectionately called "Chief" by many who knew him.
After his retirement he enjoyed playing golf, traveling, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family. Walter was a member of the California Police Chief's Association, an honorary life member of the VFW, an honorary member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 3028, a member of the San Pablo Historical Society and a former Board member of the San Pablo Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the Rejects Club, an "exclusive" men's club.
He received several honors in his life. In 1960 he was named "Man of the Year" by the Exchange Club. He was named "Citizen of the Year" in 2009 by the San Pablo Chamber of Commerce, and in 2013 he was again awarded by the Chamber of Commerce with a "Lifetime Achievement Award". He also received the Don Bosco Award from the West Contra Costa Salesian Boys and Girls Club in 2011.
Walter was preceded in death by his daughter, Laurie Dahlund, brother Charles Pedretti and brother Paul Pedretti. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Phyllis, and his two daughters Lynn Prakash and Janet Jarvis and son-in-laws Norval Prakash, Ray Jarvis and Gerry Dahlund. Walter had 5 grandchildren, Kevin Dahlund, Kelli and Katie Prakash and Brad and Natalie Jarvis who all adored their grandpa. In addition, there are several loving nieces, nephews and in-laws who he was very close to.
Walter will be greatly missed by many who knew him. His sense of humor, caring manner, sense of fairness, and generous heart will be forever remembered.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Tuesday, June 17th beginning at 12:00 Noon at Holy Angels Chapel, 2540 Church Lane in San Pablo, 510/234–2012. Interment will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
