Born Nov. 9, 1916 in Seattle, WA to Nicholas and Mabel Dennis. Bill spent his early years in Seattle, moving to San Francisco during elementary school. As a teenager, he returned to Seattle where he graduated from Roosevelt High School.
In 1942, he married Mayberry (Nell) Nelson before shipping out to serve in WWII
. He served in the Pacific before returning state side to attend Officer Candidate School. As a Lieutenant in the 1st Infantry division Signal Corp, he landed on Omaha Beach as part of the D-Day invasion in June 1944. He was later wounded, receiving a Purple Heart
and Bronze Service Arrowhead.
After the war, Bill attended SF State obtaining a BA and a teaching credential. He taught school in Rodeo for John Swett Unified for 33 years, teaching at both Garretson and Hillcrest schools.
In the 1950's, Bill and Nell moved to Alamo to raise their family. They relocated to Benicia in 1966. Both Bill and Nell embraced their community and enjoyed many happy years there. He was known for his sense of humor, always ready with a joke and he "never let a little thing like the truth, spoil a good story."
Bill was preceded in death by his wife Nell and sister, Jane Troyer. He is survived by his son Jeffrey, (Kimberly) of Benicia, daughter Julie Archer, (John) of Sacramento, and 4 grandchildren Kyle and Taylor Dennis, and Andrew and Sean Archer.
A celebration of life service is planned for a later date. Donations in Bill's name may be given to a school or library of your choosing.
