William Dobson

William J. Dobson Aug. 26, 130-7/24/13 Resident of Brentwood previously resided in Danville, Lafayette, and Pleasant Hill. Left gently and peacefully to be with his Heavenly Father after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Bill was predeceased by his parents, William and Sara Dobson, his sister Louise Jones, and uncle Thomas Edwards. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Charlene, children Cheryl and Greg (Yvette), two adored granddaughters, Renee and Robyn, and his sister Lenore Cooper-Miller. Bill was born in Kingston, PA as the youngest child and only son. He was much adored by his parents and older sisters. Even as a teenager, he showed signs of the entrepreneur he was to become by owning and running a summertime shack at the seashore, and was one of the first to purchase and own a car while still in high school. He attended Penn State University, then enlisted in the Air Force and honorably served his country for four years during the Korean War, receiving several commendations. His service to country is remembered, along with others of his hometown, on a Veteran's Memorial monument in Kingston. While stationed in Spokane, he was instantly smitten with and soon married Charlene James; after being discharged from the service, they moved to California to start their family. Bill was successful in the insurance business for many years, and in 1977 he and Charlene cofounded his dream, Designed Benefits of California, which they ran for almost 30 years before retiring. Bill will be remembered for his expansive, friendly personality, his genuine caring for all those he knew, and his thoughtfulness. He was the cheerleader for and so proud of the achievements of his family. Although it was difficult for him to communicate in his final weeks, he managed to let his family know that he loved them. One of his final smiles was upon learning that his granddaughter Renee had been appointed to and had started attending the US Air Force Academy. Bill was a lifelong member of the United Methodist church and a faithful servant of his Lord. Funeral services and Celebration of Life and Resurrection will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 10:30 am at Brentwood Community Methodist Church, 809 Second St., Brentwood, CA 94513, with a reception immediately following at the church. Arrangements by Brent-wood Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Projecthope.org or to the National Parkinson Foundation at.
