Stephen Marchi Obituary

Stephen John Marchi
April 27, 1955 - June 7, 2014
Resident of Pleasanton
Steve was born in Manchester, CT and graduated from Bedford High School in Bedford, MA, and earned a BS in Computer Science from Cal State Hayward. He joined Lawrence Livermore Laboratory in 1977 where he worked until his retirement in 2013. He then had the free time to go to the gym and ride his bike every day. With retirement, Steve also started his second career as a volunteer at local food banks.
Steve is survived by his wife of 28 years, Jodi, and two wonderful sons, John, 26 of San Francisco and Alex, 22 of Pleasanton, his parents Tom and Jane of Brentwood, two sisters Elizabeth (Rick) of Livermore, and Janice (Troy) of Livermore, and 12 nephews and nieces. His brother David preceded him in death.
Steve enjoyed running with the Fleet Feet gang in Pleasanton, and their post-run coffee or pizza gatherings with all his fellow runners, many of whom became fast friends. He also worked with the volunteers at the Western States 100 race, where he spent one night a year standing in the American River helping runners across and tried to convince all his friends and neighbors to do the same. To his credit, many took him up on that offer. Steve had recently volunteered at the Alameda County Food bank, when he also met new friends.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Thursday, June 12 from 6 to 10 pm and a funeral service at 10 am on Friday, June 13 at Graham-Hitch Mortuary, 4167 First St. in Pleasanton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alameda County Food Bank or Open Heart Kitchen.

On this anniversary I just want to remember some of our high school days with Stephen in the wind ensemble and marching band as a very good trumpet player. He also was active in thinking of activities for class activities and fund raisers. He was a great classmate from the BHS Class of 1973! Stephen I look forward to seeing you again when the Trumpet Shall Sound!

Jodi and Family,

I'm so sorry and shocked to hear about Steve's passing. I worked with Steve for many years in the D-Div days at LLNL and just so him before he retired. I'm sorry I was out of town for the funeral. I feel bad that I couldn't make it. All the best to you and your family. I'm sure these must be difficult times for you all.

Jodi,
I am so sorry to hear of Steve's passing. I was a running friend of his from his earlier running days at LLNL. Our noon time runs together were always enjoyable both for the exercise and the stimulating conversations. Such sad news. Please accept my heart felt condolences.

I was saddened when I heard the news of Steve's passing. I first met Steve when the Huffers & Puffers emerged into the running scene in the late 90's. I always enjoyed chatting with him and he always had a smile on his face. Steve's gentle spirit will live on, and he will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to the Marchi family.

Stephen our Bedford High School Class of 1973 has lost one of our most supportive and cheerful members. You had great ideas for events in high school and traveled so far to come to all our reunions. We will all sorely miss you until we see you again when the trumpet shall sound.

Jodi, John, Alex and family our heartfelt condolences and prayers are with you.

My prayers are with the Marchi family today. I was a Huffer n Puffer, and ran often with Steve, as we had that New Englander bond. I am truly saddened by the loss of Steve, a really nice guy.

On behalf of the Bedford High School Class of 1973 I would like to express our deepest sympathies on Stephen's passing. We were so fortunate to have him visit with us at our 35th reunion last year. He was one of the regulars and will be deeply missed.

I saw Steve just last Thursday evening when I was walking my dog downtown and we chatted for about 20 minutes. We were LLNL colleagues and running fanatics and we had run in several races together throughout our running careers. Though I am still at the Lab and he is happily retired, we talked about how great retirement was and he encouraged me to not wait to take the big step to leave the Lab. His sudden passing has made me realize that life is truly short and we must not be bound by artificial deadlines (turning 60). I will truly miss him and so very saddened by his passing.
