James Gess Obituary

James Daniel Gess
June 14, 1967-July 31, 2013
Resident of San Ramon
James Daniel Gess, 46, of Vallejo, California, died July 31, 2013, in his sleep of natural causes. He was born June 14, 1967, in Berkeley, California. He attended Moraga schools and was graduated from Campolindo High School in 1985. He was graduated from San Francisco State University in 1990, with a BS in Audio Engineering. Last year he became associated with local 16 in San Francisco and was happily continuing his career as an Audio Visual Technician.
A self-taught musician Jim played the guitar and harmonica. His performance instrument was always the harmonica as he played the Blues that he dearly loved. He worked five years for the "Zazu Pitts Memorial Orchestra" operating their monitors. At every performance they brought out the "Harmonica Man" to play one song. He was always thanked with wild applause. He was an integral part of the Blues scene, sharing the stage with amateurs and professionals.
He loved the desert and shared his passion for the nature and wildlife of the Southwest region with his friends and family. His first choice for a vacation was a trip to the Mojave. He attended St. Innocent Orthodox Church in Livermore. His priest, Father John, along with his wife, Eva, and his fellow parishioners inspired his life of faith.
Preceded in death by his Mother Hollie, Jim is survived by his father, Victor, of Lafayette, his sisters Cynthia Jorgensen, (daughter - Kelsey) of Discovery Bay, Catherine (Michael) Mullenberg, Walnut Creek, his love, Laurie Richardson and his sweet little black Pug Anastasia of San Ramon. He leaves his Uncle Robert (Merna) Gess, Aunts Lorraine Morrison, and Helen Robbins, of Montana. Cousins Lyndon (Charlene) Amestoy, Heather Johnson, Pam (Scott) Tomchick, Jule (Gary) Glasrud, Michael (Marisa) Morrison, Sandra (Scott) Olsen, Shannon (Jody) Benckner, and Deanna (Shilo) Shumway all of Washington, Montana and North Dakota. He is also survived by many close friends and several other cousins on the East Coast.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, August 8th, 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Orthodox Church 2425 Olivera Road Concord. Interment will follow the service at Oakmont Memorial Park. A Celebration of Life Memorial will be held on Saturday, August 31 at 1:00 p.m. at Holy Shepherd Lutheran Church, 433 Moraga Way, Orinda, California.

I was really shocked to learn of Jim´s passing and am so sorry for his friends and family, as I am certain that he was cherished. Jim and I were childhood friends and enjoyed mechanical things and mini bikes. I have built a yellow and silver Honda Z50 in his Memory. RIP Jim.

It's been a long time since Tower Concord where James & I and Suzy worked together for a while. Jim & I clicked immediately when he started at the store back in the mid-80s, and it wasn't long before he was playing harmonica on my band's demos. I was just thinking about him today and on a whim, Googled him, only to find that he'd passed away 8 years ago. Jim was a sweet guy. The world is lessened because he's gone.

Your birthday today brought back a full day of memories. It reminded me again how you left us too soon. Your quick wit and insightful conversations are so missed by family and friends. I remember my first sight of you 49 years ago today. Such a gift of life and I'm thankful for having you as long as we did. Dad

Jim was a great friend in high school, and we had many misadventures; we both shared a passion for music and movies too. I am very sad to hear of his passing, and will always have nothing but good memories of our times together. Peace to you, my friend. My best wishes for Jim's family as well. His father Victor always had a great sense of humor and generosity, which was def. passed onto Jim. I wish you the best too in this difficult time. I will miss you Jim

I was friends with Jim in grade school, and have not seen Jim since 1981 when we were freshmen in high school, but he was one of those people you don't forget. He was very funny and outgoing and we always thought he would be an entertainer. I can't believe he's gone.

Jim was an incredibly kind person with a great sense of humor. He was also a very talented man ... when we found out he actually could play the harmonica we were stunned! He was so quiet ... we had no idea. LOL ... I feel fortunate that I knew him and hope those who loved him find some solace in knowing what a quality person Jim was.

I briefly worked with Jim last month as audio visual technicians out of Local 16. He was a hard worker and a very pleasant person. I believe he would have succeeded in our union. My condolences to his family.
