John Kavanaugh Obituary

John (Jack) Kavanaugh Aug. 31, 1948 Sept. 30, 2013 Resident of Concord Jack Kavanaugh passed away from heart failure on Monday. His great height (6'7") was matched by his great generosity and low-key style. Born in Jackson, Michigan, Jack was the first born child of Irvin and Mary Kavanaugh. He moved with his family to the Bay Area in 1963, where he fell in love with the California lifestyle and vowed to remain for the rest of his life. He graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Alameda and earned a degree in business from California State University, East Bay (formerly, Cal State Hayward). Jack discovered an affinity for computer programming early in his life and built a career in the field. He worked for Blue Cross, Bank of America and Wells Fargo before taking early retirement. Jack is survived by his three sisters, Mary Jo Kent, Kathryn (Kay) Kavanaugh and Patrice Kavanaugh; brothers-in-law, John Kent and Peter Wise; nieces, Madeline (Kent) Breazeale and Althea Kent; and nephew-in-law, Jeff Breazeale. He loved dogs (especially German Shepherds), sports, Uno and backgammon. Contributions in his memory may be made to ARF (Tony La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation) at arf.net.

I say farewell to my great friend and mentor Jack Kavanaugh. His laugh and smile will be in my heart, always.

From our heart, we grasp for immortality
though our reach is much too short.

Through our spirit, we yearn for wholeness
though we are separated by death and fear.
From our pain, we teach ourselves restraint
for our minds cannot stand long the vacuum of loss.
Through our tears, we come to terms with grief
and from loss, we come to terms with mortality.
Through mortality, we gain perspective on life
and by living we get to cherish what is important to our heart.

Goodbye buddy, rock on.
