Fond Remembrances, the George Teeters Family
Before I married my husband George, he and his Uncle Wayne Teeters would share family pictures and stories with me. I have always been fascinated by history and fashion; one woman continually stood out in the family pictures. Each inquiry revealed it was Aunt Marie. She was beautiful and fashionable in those pictures and she had a twinkle in her eyes that remained when I met her though she was past her sixties. That brightness remained until the end each time I saw her.

I loved to hear stories about the Teeters family. She revealed she was born of a hard-working farming family where education was valued but often sacrificed for the sake of frugality and immediate priorities. Her conversations revealed that she was independent and she always strove to better herself through hard work and high standards while still being modest. Although the youngest of four with three older brothers, she was the first of her siblings to be married and the only one to marry while her mother was living.

I still remember the advice that she gave at our wedding: "Never go to bed angry with one another." She was thoughtful, always inquiring about our son, and we included her in our nighttime prayer ritual. It was so nice to see her beaming with pride at her lovely daughter Diana's wedding to Robert. She remembered birthdays but she was courageous and efficient when dealing with death especially when needed as in the case of her brother Dan's final effects. She remained close to her family all her life, caring for her elderly mother and stepping up to assist in the family affairs of her brothers when needed until their deaths.

When we saw her last year on Memorial Day, her eyes still twinkled despite poor health and dwindling energy. As usual, she invited us to visit, but warned me she had little interest in re-living the past and going through old photos which was a favorite activity of mine. It was a reminder that time was running short and I regret that we didn't take advantage of her gracious hospitality more often. We get so busy and stressed with our own problems we often neglect the blessings available to us today. Her death is a reminder to enjoy the wonderful family we share while we can. I believe she has joined her family in heaven and will be there to greet those of us who are able to follow.
