Richard Gorthy Obituary

Richard Judd Gorthy
March 17,1943-June 30,2013
Resident of San Ramon
Richard "Dick" Gorthy recently passed away surrounded by family. His wit and strength touched all he came across.
Richard was born in Washington, DC and raised in NY by Col. Willis C Gorthy and Ethel Gorthy. He graduated from Cornell University and was a member of SAE.
Richard worked his way through the ranks to become V.P. of Distribution at Safeway over a span of a 30-year career. In retirement, Richard became a master craftsman and local Tri-Valley historian. He constructed miniature models of historic homes and astonished the public when they were displayed in local museums and national magazines.
Richard was a dedicated husband of 46 years to Jeanette (Heidi), a loving father to Michelle and Amanda, grandfather and pirate to Sage and Nicolas and father-in-law to Joshua. He is also survived by his brother Willis, and sisters Carolyn and Sue. All who knew and loved him spoke of his integrity and childlike spirit.
The family will host a private memorial. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation at: www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/richardgorthy/

Being quite younger than my first cousin I only became more engaged with him in my adult years and note he was always so very supportive and loving of family. He loved our history and our contributions. He was so proud of his pictures from Bear Lake and knowing and understanding what our family had been through. His Aunt Joyce would remember him as a "Big tease with a twinkle in his eye." And he made Uncle Al laugh to the point of curing his asthma! I think him a beautiful man who saw life in a very happy way. I know he is smiling with his family in heaven and I raise a toast to you, Dick, for being so real, warm and loving. I can only imagine what you, Joyce, Bert and Al are doing now--sharing a smile and chuckle no doubt. We love you and you are always with us. Jon, Jan, Justine & Carolyn
