Stephen Wyrick Obituary

Stephen Adolpus Wyrick Jun. 6, 1915 ~ Feb. 6, 2014 Resident of Pt. Richmond Stephen was born in Gainesville, Texas on June 13, 1915 to Adolphus Wyrick and Patience Dove Gaylor Wyrick. He graduated from Gainesville High on May 29, 1936 where he played varsity football. Following in the footsteps of his mother who was valedictorian of her graduating class of 1900 and who subsequently went on to establish a business college at Wills Point, Steve studied accounting at Gainesville Junior College. In Steve's spare time, he performed in The Gainesville Community Circus in the acrobat show. At some point in his younger years, he also did a stint in the Army where he was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. There, he was a member of the Leopard Football Squad. He also participated on the wrestling team. Midway through his studies at the community college, the railroad was soliciting the locals to come aboard. The pay was good and therefore Steve decided to change career paths and signed on to the railroad. The railroad is what brought Steve to the Bay Area in the mid 1940's where he settled in point Richmond. During his tenure with the railroad, he worked on freight trains as a brakeman and conductor for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway System and then moved on to work the Amtrak passenger trains. He retired from the railroad on May 27, 1980. Steve was a lifelong member of the Moose Lodge and a member of the Richmond Lawn Bowling Club. He was also an avid gardener. Steve is survived by his devoted daughter, Carol Sweatt, along with son-in-law Robert Sweatt; his loving granddaughter, Karla Mares and her husband Gerardo Mares; great-grandson Gerardo Mares Jr. and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. A celebration of Steve's life will be held February 17th at Wilson and Kratzer Mortuary located at 455 24th St. in Richmond. Visitation will be between 11:00 and 1:00. The memorial service will commence at 1:00. Steve will be laid to rest at Rolling Hills Memorial Park at 400 Hilltop Dr. in Richmond. Family and friends are invited to return to Steve's house for refreshments.
