Catherine Mae (Chapman) DuBose June 18, 1918 - November 24, 2012 Resident of Yountville, Ca Catherine was born eldest of 5 children to Doc & Kitty Chapman in a house built by her Grandfather, on Crescent St. in Oakland. From there the family moved to St. Louis, then Sky Haven Ranch, Lake Hughes Ca. (later owned by Roy Rogers). Finally settling in Glendale, Ca. As a young child she remembered her parents hosting Charles Lindbergh for late night talks on airline safety. At 16 she graduated Herbert Hoover H.S., class of 1934. Employed at Kahn's Dept. store as a buyer, and Standard Oil as a chemist. On Feb. 13, 1943, the call went out to "Free a Marine to Fight", on Feb 15, 1943 she answered the call. Traveling to San Francisco, she was 1st in line to enlist in the newly formed Marine Corp. Women's Reserve. She completed Boot Camp at Hunter College, New York City, 1st Platoon. Boot Camp was conducted by male Drill Instructors, as at the time there were no women D.I.'s. She entered Quartermaster Training graduating 1st in her class which included men and women. Then Corporal, assigned to Motor Transport at Camp Lejuene, NC with charge of 2 Platoons of "Women Leathernecks". Upon discharge after WWII, she returned to the Bay Area as a chemist at Cutter Labs, where she met her husband, Thomas DuBose. They started their family while Thomas completed his Naval career. While raising their family, she attended Mills College, graduating Class of '56 with a teaching credential. After 30 years teaching, she obtained her Real Estate license. Later, she learned signing and was a Missionary to the deaf. Although Catherine had many accomplishments in her life, should you ask, she would say what brought her the most Joy was knowing and following the teachings of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Catherine was preceeded in death by Parents Dewey Otis and Catherine Mae Chapman; Siblings Chief Petty Officer Dewey Chapman Jr U.S.N., Doris Wiedemann, and Sgt. George Logan Chapman U.S.M.C K.I.A. 8 Aug. 1950 Korea., Husband Master Chief Gunners Mate Thomas C. DuBose U.S.N. Retired, Pearl Harbor Survivor. Son, Timothy, Granddaughter Julianna. She is survived by Sister Pat Marini, Daughters Kathleen (Floyd) Price, Suzanne Nunes, and Yvonne (Joseph) Giordano, and son Thomas C. Dubose Jr; 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. Cherished friends James Musson, and Dottie Ward. Fondly known as CayceMae at the Veterans Home, she also leaves many friends and fellow Veterans. An American Patriot from: "The Greatest Generation" Semper Fi Corporal Semper Fi. Amen. A Memorial Service will be held on Dec. 13, 2012 at 10:00am at Memorial Chapel, California Veterans Home, 160 California Dr. Yountville, Ca 94599. Burial will be held on the Veterans Home grounds. Catherine supported many Christian ministries. Donations in her honor may be made to the Christian ministry of your choice, or the Veterans Home Memorial Chapel.
