Frank Joseph Culum November 4, 1923 - May 2, 2013 Resident of Concord Frank "The Rock" Culum was born in Butte, Montana in 1923, and was raised during the Depression as the oldest of 6 siblings. He joined the
at 18 years of age in November of 1941 during the start of World War II, where he fought in the Pacific on the Destroyer USS Dunlap. The US Navy recognized his intelligence and diverse skillsets and sent him to
where he became an officer of the US Navy. He graduated from Northwestern in 1946 with a Bachelor's of Science in Chemistry. He considered this his greatest personal achievement. During the summer months while at school, he worked at Yellowstone National Park as a park ranger where he continued his love for education at the University of Montana. He was a true outdoorsman and was passionate about hunting and fishing. In his younger days he was athletic and throughout his life he enjoyed sports. He was named Outstanding Young Man of the Year in 1955 for his community service in the development and creation of the Little League Program in Pittsburg, California. He proudly worked at US Steel as a metallurgist in Pittsburg for 35 years. After his retirement in 1981, he started his own business where he sold and installed custom made athletic equipment for the next 30 years. With a blessed sense of humor, he enjoyed discussing philosophy, the arts, and psychology. Some of Frank's favorite moments were those spent with his family while celebrating the holidays. His strong character and dedication to loved ones was admired by everyone who knew him. Married to Marie Culum for 61 years, and survived by; his step-son David Davi, and his children Demery Donavan, Debra Gonsalves, Denise Willett, Frank Culum Jr., Donald Culum, Diane Culum, his 12 Grandchildren, 6 Great Grandchildrenand his beloved dog Josie. He will be deeply missed by family and friends. It was his wife of 61 years who kept his heart full of joy, excitement, and laughter. He was born determined. Born to survive. Competitive at heart.
