Michael Gendelman Obituary

Michael Neil Gendelman Aug. 26, 1953 ~ April 28, 2011 Resident of Walnut Creek Michael was a bon vivant and an indelible character. He enjoyed fishing and the outdoors, collecting coins and stamps, and liked to shop. Michael was a tax controversy attorney for the IRS and then in private practice. He attended Yeshiva University in New York City and Gonzaga University School of Law in Spokane, Washington. He especially enjoyed practicing in his own firm and the opportunity to help others in difficult circumstances. In 1992, Michael received a liver transplant. He was grateful for the second chance he was given and knew he had a responsibility to contribute meaningfully and suck all the marrow out of life. Michael never let his more recent illness dampen his optimism or his enthusiasm for the law. Michael was preceded in death by his parents Lila and Irving. He is survived by his children Adam and Sharon, siblings Joel and Donna, and his new granddaughter, Eleanor. He will also be missed by his longtime friend Janice. He was very proud of his children and in February was so excited to become a grandfather. Donations in Michael's honor can be made to the UCSF Liver Transplant Fund (B1503), P.O. Box 45339, San Francisco, CA 94145 or online at support.ucsf.edu.

Michael was my classmate from grades one - eight. We lost touch and reconnected when a reunion was planned. When he learned of my IRS problem, he generously stepped up to the plate and helped me beyond measure. I am shocked to learn of his passing and wish to express my gratitude for his incredible kindness and generosity.
Blessings to all his family and loved-ones.

I had the pleasure of working with Michael. More importantly, I had the pleasure of his company, such as when he insisted on giving me a stamp (an old postage stamp) from his office as a gift before I left our meeting one time. (He had many old stamps in his desk!) There was one other time -- in the presence of a group of right wing Texan lawyers -- that to this day brings joy to me. You had to be there. I almost got a hernia laughing.

I just learned today that he died. I am very sorry to hear it.

Peace be with you Michael.

I became a client 6 years ago during one of the darkest periods in my life. Michael came to my rescue and we remained friends. He lived life large and I always admired his wit and passion.
He will be missed greatly. I lost a great friend.
My sympathies to his family and loved ones.
Sincerely, Deirdre Osterman

I was pleased to have met Michael, we joked and laughed, of what else... taxes. I wish the Gendelman family and friends peace and love, during this time of sorrow... and each day thereafter.

The good Mensch from Brooklyn. I met Michael at the Hispanic Chamber. He always involved in protecting the small businessmen from the wiles of the IRS. Not only did he protect his clients, he volunteered his time to the small biz community in the class room. A passionate man and lover of life. We will miss him.

We were honored to have Michael as a member of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Contra Costa County. Michael was always adamant about making sure that his clients were given their right. He was especially concerned about the IRS treatment of recent Latino immigrants.

Michael was a great man and we were very happy to have met him and work with him.
