i have been a friend of Nell's for the past thirty years, and just now found out she had died. Our birthdays are both in December, and I kept wondering why she didn't call me for my birthday.
I loved Nell very much. She and I were co-managers of Civic Center Residence in the Tenderloin for several years. She was always kind and respectful of everyone-and she and I would laugh for days about everything. She made me laugh all the time. I really can't believe she is gone. She and Devon ran the Residence like it was an elegant hotel. At night Devon would play the piano over the dinner hour. We put local artists works up on the wall. We opened the residence to women with children who needed a home. We had opera prodigies living there and they would lead the singing of xmas carols all through the neighborhood.
I could go on and on. She was my dear friend and I can't begin to describe the depth of my loss. She was an absolute original. Kind, funny, and in her day, she could sing like noone else.
Rest in peace, dear friend. you have loved and lived well. YOu have been a truly good friend to me. I will love and miss you always.

We'll miss Aunt Nell--her hilarious stories, the way she told it as she saw it, and her generous spirit.
