RITA FREDLUND Obituary
Rita Anne Fredlund Mar. 29, 1942 Aug. 20, 2012 Resident of Walnut Creek Rita Fredlund, 70, died unexpectedly Aug. 20, 2012 at Rossmoor in Walnut Creek, Calif. Rita found life filled with adventure and family. She was born in Detroit, Mich. on March 29, 1942, the fourth of five children of Max and Theresa Luibrand. She loved playing with friends and was acclaimed the pogo stick champion of their neighborhood in Detroit. After graduating from Dominican High School, Rita attended University of Detroit for a year. Adventure still beckoned and she accepted a job with the Peace Corps in their offices in Washington, D.C. She returned to Detroit to continue her studies at Wayne State University in 1968. That's where she met Mel Fredlund, her future husband and love of her life. Rita and Mel moved to the Bay Area and were married in Muir Woods in 1972. Rita was proud of improving her public speaking skills through Toastmasters and of earning her private pilot's license (1978). While working for the Bechtel Corporation in San Francisco, she completed her MBA degree in Management in 1998. She then took over management of Advocate, the family software development company, until it was sold in 2010. After she and Mel moved to Rossmoor in 1992 Rita became very active in community governance. She was twice elected to the Board of Directors of the Golden Rain Foundation, helping develop plans and policies for the East Bay community. She discovered a love for lawn bowling after she and Mel joined the lawn bowling club in 2011. Rita is survived by her husband Mel, sister Louise Hart, brothers John (Marcy) and Rich (Vicki) Luibrand, sister-in-law Judy, two step-daughters, a granddaughter, a great-grandson and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother George Luibrand and stepdaughter Denise Fredlund. She will be missed by her fellow board members and many Rossmoorians. To honor Rita, the family suggests donations to the Rossmoor Fund in her name.
