Resident of Martinez
Royal Wendell Sherwood passed away peacefully on February 23, 2014, in the home of his son, surrounded by his children and grandchildren. Royal was born in Johnson, Kansas, one of 11 children, to Alpha Loid Sherwood and Laura Roles Sherwood.
Royal attended high school in Holly, Colorado, class of 1952. After high school, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. Upon his return from the Army, he attended Colorado State University, Greeley, graduating in 1958. Royal married Joyce Knapp of Rocky Ford, Colorado, in 1958 before accepting his first teaching job in Brule, Nebraska. Royal taught woodshop, and coached football, track and basketball.
In 1960, Royal accepted a teaching position with Martinez Unified School District, where he remained until his retirement in 1997. He held many teaching positions during his career and retired as Director of the Martinez Adult School. During his tenure, he earned his Master of Science in Education from St. Mary's College, Moraga, CA.
Outside of his teaching career, Royal raised cattle in the Martinez hills and was a leader for many years in the local 4-H Club. He was also a very active member of the International Kiwanis Club of Martinez for more than 30 years. Royal was also a very active member of the California Council on Adult Education and the California Adult Education Administrator's Association.
Royal is survived by his children, Kevin Sherwood (Theresa) and Karen Sherwood, and his grandchildren, Justin Cooper, Grace and Claire Sherwood. Also surviving Royal is his brother, Sydney Ray. Royal was preceded in death by 6 brothers and 3 sisters and his second wife, Diane Wicker Sherwood (1941 – 2006).
Friends and Family are invited to a memorial service and interment on Friday, February 28, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at Oakmont Memorial Park & Mortuary, 2099 Reliez Valley Road, Lafayette, CA 94549. Public visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m.
