Jim (Leon Monroe) Wyrick Obituary
"Jim" (Leon Monroe) Wyrick
May 16, 1922 - March 11, 2014
Resident of Pleasant Hill
Another of America's "Greatest Generation," Jim Wyrick, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle, has left us. Jim grew up in Los Angeles, CA with his younger brother, Richard, whom he adored and who died tragically in 1965. Jim's pursuit of painting and visual arts was cut short by WWII during which he became a Combat Battalion Engineer, serving in England, France and Germany. During the war, he fell in love with and married Sarah Elizabeth ("Betty") Sharp of Modesto, CA. After the war, he became a Control Systems Engineer with Chevron, a career that lasted 38 years. He and Sarah Elizabeth raised three children in Pleasant Hill, CA. His beloved Sarah Elizabeth died in 1991.
A life-long "thrifter," Jim also loved camping, hiking, reading non-fiction, working cross-word puzzles, computing on his Mac, exploring new places, and hosting parties on his patio. He was especially proud to have been a founding member of Chapter 146, Sons in Retirement, and of his Board membership in the Navy League of the United States. He had a special love for his "Mall Walkers" friends. Most of all, he treasured his Hillcrest Church "family," and was honored to be a charter member of the church, serving on many boards and worshipping for over 60 years. Hillcrest was like a second home to him, and was his "rock" during times of difficulty.
Jim is survived by his loving second wife, Elizabeth ("Betty") Bunnell Wyrick, whom he married in in 1995. During their eighteen years of marriage, Betty ensured that the two of them enjoyed life to the fullest, with many rich experiences. These included travel, theatre, symphony, wine tasting and much more. He is also survived by his children, Cathy Robie of Pleasant Hill, CA, Kim Vetterli of Kihei, HI and Todd Wyrick of Honolulu, HI; his grandchildren, Audrey Park, Joe Testa, Nicole Hewson, Jay Robie and Lynn Zimmerman; and eight great-grandchildren. There was always a special place in Jim's heart for his nephews, Mike, Wayne, and Randy Wyrick. Jim was extremely fond of Betty's children, Jeff Bunnell and Nora Barnes, and their families.
A celebration of Jim's life will be held at Hillcrest Congregational Church, 404 Gregory Lane, Pleasant Hill, CA on Saturday March 29, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. Donations may be made to Hillcrest Church Upper Room Fellowship, an organization Jim treasured.
