JoAnne Lurker Strand|
January 13th, 1931-May 25th, 2014
Born in Fort Worth Texas, JoAnne was the only child of Thelma and Lawrence Lurker.
She moved to California when she was a young child and grew up in Berkeley, where she went to Berkeley High and then attended the University of California Berkeley. She met her future husband Arthur Strand while they both worked at the Daily Cal, the student newspaper. JoAnne is survived by her six children, Larry, David, Sharon Sherman, Nancy Grant, Steven and Richard. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
JoAnne worked her way up from delivering newspapers and supervising carriers to management positions at both the Oakland Tribune and the Contra Costa Times. Outside of her successful career she enjoyed gardening, traveling the world, foreign languages and was a skilled piano player. One of her dearest passions was rooting for her Cal Bear football team (Go Bears) and the Oakland A's.
Spending time with family and friends were the most important things for JoAnne and her outgoing, cheerful and witty personality made her the life of the party. JoAnne will be missed terribly by her extensive circle of family and friends, as a true matriarch, and a much beloved woman of presence, perseverance and courage.
Graveside services will be held on Sunday June 1st, 10am at Oakmont Memorial Park and Mortuary in Lafayette, 2099 Reliez Valley Road, with a celebration of her life immediately following the service, at around 12pm at her home in Danville at 161 Emerald Drive. We invite all friends of JoAnne to attend.
