Penn Keller, a member of a pioneer Martinez family, passed away unexpectedly at John Muir Hospital. He was the son of Winston A. and Eleanor Hyde (Chick) Keller, and the grandson of the prominent Contra Costa business family George and Methie Keller, as well as Lillian Hyde Chick.
Penn graduated from University of California, Berkeley in 1958, and the University of San Francisco Pharmacy School in 1960. He attended High School School at Alhambra, and graduated from Bellarmine Prep School in 1954. He began his pharmacist and business career in Santa Cruz, CA, and in 1968 was invited to join his father and uncle as a pharmacist at Martinez Rexall Drug. Later, he became president and general manager with Valco Drug Company, a family enterprise, managing over 10 stores in Contra Costa and Solano counties. He was a co-founder of both John Muir National Bank and Westamerica Bank. Active in local politics. Penn was appointed by Governor Ronald Reagan to the California Water Board in the 1970's.
He was an avid fisherman and golfer.
Penn is survived by his wife of 54 years, Christine Sharkey Keller, and their three children, Marc Winton Keller of Santa Cruz, Kristy Ann Keller of Martinez and Holly Keller Dredge of Antelope. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Bradford, Mackenzie and Jacob Dredge, and Holly Keller, as well as his brothers, Patrick Keller and his wife Sandra, and John Keller and his wife Phyllis.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Martinez at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24, followed immediately by a celebration of life at the Martinez Event Center.
