Lois Pauline Garetson
January 23, 1922 - June 17, 2014
Resident of Danville
Lois Pauline (Amburgy) Garetson, 92, passed away on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 in Danville, California.
Lois was a mother in the truest sense of the word, caring for her family and actively involved with caring for the people of her community. Lois worked as a surgical R.N. at Concord Community Hospital (Mt. Diablo Hospital) for many years, before becoming a staff nurse at Contra Costa County Juvenile Hall. She retired from nursing in 1984, but her community service continued. After retirement Lois worked with the
Lois was a strong Christian woman and was always actively involved in her church. She was a life-long supporter of Billy Graham and an avid listener to KEAR radio station. Lois and her husband, Gordy, spent many years teaching Sunday School at Valley Baptist Church in Walnut Creek, before joining Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church, where she served on various boards. After Gordy's death in 1994, she moved a few years later to the PEO residential home in San Jose and attended Foothill Presbyterian Church. In 2007, Lois moved to Diablo Lodge in Danville to live closer to her daughter, Nancy, and her numerous friends in the area.
Lois was also an active member of the PEO Sisterhood, Chapter IL in Oakland, and a strong supporter of Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri. One of her proudest moments was attending the graduation of her granddaughter, Jenika, from Cottey in 2008. During her membership with Chapter IL, Lois served as Chapter President and Reciprocity President for the greater Bay Area.
Born to Silas Dean and Lucinda Amburgy in Maytown, Kentucky, on January 23, 1922, Lois was number eight in a family of nine children. She received her R.N. degree from St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in Covington, Kentucky in 1943 and served as a Lieutenant in the
US Air Force
during World War II. She met Pvt. Gordon (Gordy) Eugene Garetson while stationed at McClelland Field in Sacramento, California. Gordy at 6'4" and Lois at 5'3" were quite a site on the basketball court, and raised some eyebrows as they ignored the fraternization policy between an officer and a private. They were married on August 29,1947 and lived in Sacramento until 1957 when they moved to Concord, California.
Lois is survived by her daughter Nancy Garetson (Jan Hufnagl) of Danville, son Thom (Mary Wehmiller) of Hong Kong, granddaughter Jenika Garetson of Columbus, Ohio, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband Gordy, her parents, and her eight siblings.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, July 26 at 11:00 am with a reception following at Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church, located at 1801 Lacassie Ave, Walnut Creek, CA.
