Obituary Condolences Gallery

Donald Wayne Monson Mar. 26, 1938 - Nov. 4, 2009 Resident of Danville On November 4th at 7:13 a.m., Donald Wayne Monson passed away peacefully after a courageous 6-month battle with cancer at home with his loving daughter Susan by his side. Born in Daly City to Raymond and Gladys Monson, Don graduated from both Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Jefferson High School. Then Don served in the United States Marine Corps and after his honorable discharge as a Lance Corporal, he was a loyal and active member of the Marine Corps League, Detachment #942 and the 1st Marine Division Association. He also dedicated himself to The Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, making certain these members of "The Greatest Generation" were able to attend the annual December 7th commemoration on Mt. Diablo and that the "Pearls" were never without a ride, a smile or a helping hand. For his service, The Pearl Harbor Survivors made him an honorary member of their association. After serving with distinction in the USMC, Don joined the Hartford Insurance Company as an underwriter, later moving on to Everett Stark and Company as an insurance broker. In 1980 he formed his own independent agency, Monson & Michaels, which he operated until his retirement in 1993. Upon retirement Don became an avid traveler, exploring the world from Paris to Thailand, yet he always had a special place in his heart for Hawaii, where he planned to retire. Don was married for 13 years to the former Carol Martha Hoover, mother of daughter Susan and son Michael, both of Daly City and Danville. Among his survivors are brother Leonard of Scottsdale, Az and his sons Mathew of Turlock, Ca and Mark of Scottsdale, Az; sister Jayne of Half Moon Bay and her daughter Candice of Benicia, Ca and Shawn of Boulder, Co; cousins Barbara La Pearl, Wendy Fonarow, Terri Silke-Grupp of Los Angeles, Ca and Phyllis Burnett of Cupertino, Ca.
