Altie had a genuine kindness, an infectious smile and laughter and was a humble person. We met at Sharpstown Dodge in Houston and was invited over to his home, where I met his family and newborn baby. Altie was a beacon of positivity even through the time with the Oilers, I am saddened to learn of your fate, but will carry your spirit always, and glad to know you are now one of GOD's RB. Rest in Peace, Hermano!

Dear Taylor's:
Your dad was our hero in the old Detroit neighborhood. Coolest guy we ever knew. Had the neighbor kids over a lot when he really didn't have too (including me). I'm sure we bugged the heck out of him but he never said no. I'll never forget him and have his rookie card in my living room.
Very sorry Altie has passed.
Take good care

Altie,

I was saddened to hear of your passing. I just heard this last weekend.

Growing up, one is fortunate to meet a peer who epitomized what life is about – Greatness is defined by Humility. I was one of the blessed ones to know you as a friend. A friend who I played against in Little League; and, a friend who was a part of your Pittsburg Senior High Class of 1965. Respect and dignity commanded your presence. (You spoke softly, but carried a “Big Stick”). It was a by-product of your humility.

As everyone knows, you were a gifted athlete. What very few knew, is that you would have been a better baseball player than football player! Between you and your brother Don, you were the original “Bash Brothers” before the “Bash Brothers” surfaced as Oakland A’s. You were Ted Williams and Barry Bonds of Pittsburg (Major) Little League. No one wanted to pitch to you. But, if they had to pitch a strike – more times than not, it was a homerun!! And, a colossal homerun at that!!!

I asked you once -- when we were seniors in high school -- why did you give up baseball? Without hesitation and a smile on your face, you replied, “I love football.” For those who knew you, that’s all you had to say … [As an aside, I think you would have surpassed Hank Aaron as the homerun king of major league baseball, if baseball was your true love].

Altie, God Bless You. Rest In Peace. Until we meet again in our next life-time … Thank You for being my friend.

My prayers are with the family of Mr. Altie Taylor Jr.One of Pittsburg's High School, alltime greatest athlete's. As a graduate of PHS in 1974, I remember watching Altie on TV, and how proud we all were, seeing a PHS grad, making it happen on the football field at a professional level. Thank you Altie for the Good memories. Altie Taylor Jr.led the Detroit Lion's in rushing three straight seasons (1972-74)was voted the clubs offensive MVP in 1973,after rushing for 719 yards and three touchdowns. He currently ranks fourth in Lion's career rushing with 4,297 yards. And I can write alot more on this great athlete from PHS.But I will just cherish the memories, and let the Taylor family know that you have a friend in Puerto Rico, that has you in his prayer, knowing that God will see you through this and will comfort your hearts through Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior.

I knew Altie for only 8 months. I was his Math tutor, but ended up tutoring him in all his subjects. Altie was the hardest worker I ever knew. He was determined to understand the material, and wouldn't quit until he did. He wanted to prove to himself and to his parents and six children that he could do it. He said he was going to take his diploma, hang it on the wall, so that he and his dog, Flavor, could stare at it. He sometimes came 7 days a week(if not 5 or 6), 2-3, even 4 hours, each day studying.
In that time, Altie and I became good friends. Altie's first love in life, besides his mother, father, siblings, six children, grandchildren, and dog, was God. Everything that he said and did was about God. When he wrote notes in class or read his textbooks, he'd write scripture or "Amens" or prayers in the margins or after paragraphs. Jesus Christ and God were always on his mind. We got to talk about that...alot.
Ironically, the last project and paper/presentation he was working on was about "The Man Who Changed the World, Jesus Christ." It was for his Humanities class. Altie would have been happy to receive a "D" in any of his classes, but he would have definitely received an "A" for Humanities. He loved that class because he was allowed to express himself spiritually through his poetry, analyses, and presentations.
So, when I saw him for the last time on Friday night(March 12), I was comforted to know that the last thing on his mind was about Jesus Christ and God--we were excited that his final project(ending his last semester at Heald College),was going to be about Jesus Christ! It couldn't have been a more perfect or appropriate ending.
It was a privilege, an honor, and a blessing to know Altie Taylor,jr.. I will miss him very, very much!
