Obituary Condolences

Phyllis Marie Walls Resident of Pleasant Hill Born Feb. 19, 1924 in Morinville, Alberta, Phyllis Marie Walls (Behiels) passed away on March 29, 2010 in Pleasant Hill with warm, expert residential care. The youngest of 14, Mom was predeceased by 6 sisters and 7 brothers, and on Dec. 5, 1998, by her husband, Glenn. Dad met Mom in 1945 when stationed at Edmonton serving in the then U.S. Army Air Force. Leaving Canada, their first home was built practically by themselves, within 7 years after coming to California, where our family that became 7 children began, in Oakland. Mom was honored as the 1956 Oakland Mother of the Year at the extraordinary Morcom Rose Garden. Active for years in Boy and Girl Scout troops, the neighborhood and school, Mom sewed costumes for annual outdoor dance festivals while Dad constructed wooden booths in the schoolyard for St. Lawrence O'Toole's annual carnival. If Mom wasn't cooking, gardening, singing, working on her drapery business, doing needlepoint, knitting or crocheting, she was showing someone else how. By 1968, more space beckoned and the family moved to Walnut Creek, then eventually to Pleasant Hill. Mom fell in love with babysitting at the local YMCA, discovered water aerobics and the satisfaction of selling clothing in the Men's Department at Mervyn's Department Store for 10 years to defray the costs of many daughters' weddings. Once Dad retired from Carpenters' Union Local 713, it was travel: to his home in Arkansas, a World's Fair, the St. Lawrence Seaway, Niagara Falls, Alaska and cruises to warm places like the Virgin Islands with Mom's closest sister, Aunt Sue. Survived by 7 children: twins Robert (Antioch) and Linda (Berkeley; Gary; Ronda (Martinez); Debra (Danville); Pamela (Monterey); and Sandra (Concord); 9 grandchildren: Anthony; Jeremy (Bob); Kelly; Ashley (Gary); Shanna; Vanessa (Ronda); Ariel; Hanna (Sandra); and Jasper (Pamela); and 7 great-grandchildren: Daphne; Samantha (Tony); Tyler; Briana (Kelly); Travis (Shanna); Ryder (Vanessa) and Elle (Ashley). Mom leaves a long legacy of love, work, prayer, partying and play. We will miss her immeasurably. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, April 5th at 11am at Christ The King Catholic Church, 199 Brandon Road, Pleasant Hill, followed by interment at Oakmont Memorial Park, 2099 Reliez Valley Rd., Lafayette. Memorial contributions can be made to the , P.O.
