Obituary Condolences

Richard S. Greenwood June 20, 1940 ~ May 17, 2010 Resident of Walnut Creek Beloved husband and father, cherished brother-in-law, loyal friend. Rich passed away on Monday, May 17, 2010 after a long illness with his family at his side. Born in Boise, Idaho to Victor and Mary Grunbaum (later anglicized to Greenwood), Rich was raised in the Napa Valley, graduating from Napa Valley High School in 1958. He went on to graduate with a degree in Pharmacy from the University of the Pacific in 1963. His career took him from the Greenwood Pharmacy in Antioch, where he worked with his father, to the Value Giant, Walgreens and McDermott Pharmacy chains. In 1974 he joined the State of California, Department of Health Services, as a consulting pharmacist. He served in this position until 1999 when he retired. Rich met Sandy at poolside in August of 1972 and they were married the following July 21st in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. They were blessed with two sons, Geoffrey in 1976 and Sean in 1979, and of course, their beloved Beagles. Rich was an avid sports fan, particularly of basketball. He coached the boys in baseball and basketball and operated from the philosophy that there was potential in every child. He often chose the children no one else wanted and encouraged them to become their best. His life was enriched by many friends from both his high school and college days. We have been grateful for their continued presence during his illness. Their calls and visits lifted his spirits and gave him the strength to go on. Rich is survived by his wife of 36 years Sandy; sons Geoff of Murrieta, CA and Sean of Walnut Creek; sister-in-law Ginger; and Beagle baby, Lucy. He was predeceased by his parents Victor and Mary Greenwood. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of his life on Friday, May 28, 2010 at 11:00am at the San Ramon Valley United Methodist Church located at 902 Danville Blvd., Alamo, California. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the Richard Greenwood Family Basketball Endowment Fund, University of the Pacific, Advancement Services Department, 3601 Pacific Avenue Stockton, CA 95211 or to a charity of your choice. Remember, I am just a thought away!
