Dr. James Steve Counelis

Resident of Orinda
Dr. James Steve Counelis passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. Born in Streator, IL, he was the second child of Greek immigrant parents, Steve and Mary Counelis. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Dr. Counelis was a prolific educational researcher, writer and teacher. He started teaching in the Chicago public high schools in 1951 and inspired thousands of students throughout his 47 year teaching career. He was Professor of Education at the University of San Francisco for 28 years. He was conferred Archon of St. Andrew, for his distinguished service to the Greek Orthodox Church as a professional educator, scholar and layman. Dr. Counelis is survived by his wife of 49 years Anna Marakas Counelis, son Hon. Steven G. Counelis (Stacia), grandchildren Anna and Christos; son Dr. George J. Counelis (Sophia), grandchildren Demetrios and Demosthenes; sister Mabel Argires, nephews George and Steve Argires; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dr. O.N. and Tula Gallanes. Family and friends are invited Sunday, July 29 to attend a visitation at 4:00pm and Trisagion at 5:00pm at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Ascension, 4700 Lincoln Ave., Oakland, CA 94602. Funeral Services, Monday, July 30, 11:00am at Ascension Cathedral. Interment Mt. View Cemetery, Oakland. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ascension Cathedral Capital Campaign in his memory. For further information, please call Harry W. Greer, Funeral Director. (Ca Lic. FDR 745)

coming to this rather belatedly....however needed to say that dr counelis as professor at USF when i was a grad student was an inspirational teacher. his classes were rich and inspiring. one of the best faculty i have had in my years as an academic. many thanks jim! rest in peace. priscilla richardson...graduate USF EdD program 1991.
