Caryl Emerson Roeder Obituary
Caryl Emerson Roeder
April 2, 1929 - Nov. 4, 2012
Resident of Benicia
Caryl Bader Emerson Roeder, beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and music teacher, passed away peacefully at her home in Benicia, CA, on Sunday, November 4, 2012, surrounded by her loved ones. We are devastated, yet so very grateful for the tremendous care she received and for the abundant prayers that surrounded her in passing. Caryl will be truly missed beyond words.
Caryl adored her husband and family and loved teaching piano to generations of cherished students. Her loving smile, sense of humor, dedication to loved ones, musical gifts, and abundant zest for life will be missed by all who were blessed to know her.
Caryl was born April 2, 1929, in Chicago, IL, to Karl and Elizabeth Bader. She was a child prodigy on the piano, playing on the radio at the age of four, and continued with her musical career, graduating from Northwestern University and Mills College, where she studied under Darius Milhaud. She continued her education earning a Master's degree in Music, a Master's of Library Science, and a Doctorate of Education degree from San Francisco State College. Caryl worked as a children's librarian in the Richmond Unified School District, and in her retirement, taught the piano to a generation of much-loved students. Caryl married John Emerson in 1952, who preceded her in death in 1999. In 2005, Caryl married Charles Roeder.
Caryl is survived by her dearly loved husband Charles Roeder, her two daughters, Ann Emerson and Joyce Emerson Graham; two beloved grandchildren, Jennifer Ellen Harlow and Gregory Paul Harlow; and her cherished sister, Gloria Bader Merchant.
A funeral mass will be held Saturday, November 17 at 11 a.m. at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Benicia, CA, with a memorial, celebration-gathering immediately following the service in the parish hall.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either St. Dominic's Catholic Church, 475 E I Street, Benicia, CA 94510 or Caryl's lifelong musical sorority: Mu Phi Epsilon (Berkeley Chapter); c/o Treasurer, 8 Garden Drive, Kensington, CA 94708.
