Robert R. (Bob) Singleton of Lafayette, CA, died Dec. 25, 2012 at his home. He was born May 17, 1920, in Kansas City, KS, the son of James R. Singleton and G. Pearl Johnson. He was predeceased by his sister, Doris Pike. He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Mary Jane (Chase) Singleton; by sister June Wilson of Shawnee Mission, KS; by sons Don (Donna) Singleton of Ottawa, Canada, Jack (Maggie) Singleton of Knoxville, TN, and Robert C. Singleton of Lafayette, CA; by daughter Nancy Singleton of Missoula, MT; by six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Following graduation with a degree in Agronomy from Kansas State University in 1942, he was called to duty in the Army as a Lt. in the Infantry. He was sent to Europe in Jan. 1945 where he served with the 80th Division in Luxembourg and Germany. He received the Purple Heart for a wound received in March 1945.
After his release from active duty in Oct. 1945, he returned to Kansas State University for a year of graduate study prior to accepting a job with the Dole Pineapple Co. in Hawaii. He held various supervisory positions on pineapple plantations on the islands of Oahu, Lanai, and Molokai. In 1976, after 30 years in Hawaii, he was transferred to Dole's San Francisco office where he oversaw pineapple agriculture for Dole's worldwide operations. He continued to live in Lafayette following his retirement in 1985.
His hobbies included traveling, genealogy, gardening, and bridge. He was a member of SIRS Branch 116 in Walnut Creek.
A memorial service will be held January 11, 2013, at 2:00 PM at the Lafayette Veterans Memorial Building, 3780 Mount Diablo Blvd. His ashes will be placed at the Lafayette Cemetery.
