Carmen M. Hanson
September 16, 1923 - May 18, 2013
Resident of Walnut Creek
Carmen passed away surrounded by her three sons, Terry, Kim, Denny, and daughter in-law Vicki after being admitted to the hospital. She was born on a farm in Pawnee County just outside of Macksville, Kansas to Henry and Nira (Rodman) Hardie, the second youngest of eight children.
She survived the dust bowl and great depression, but like most in her generation she was defined by World War II. After graduating from HS in 1942 she traveled by train to Stockton Calif. and later moved to a boarding house in Alameda when she took a position at the Alameda Naval Air Station assembling airplane engines. She enrolled in
but withdrew when a handsome young Coast Guardsman (a Pearl Harbor survivor) that she met in Alameda showed up in LA to ask her to marry him.
Carmen and Roger Hanson (Roddy) were married in Oakland Calif. on Easter Sunday April 9, 1944. They lived in Oakland for a while at the end of the war before moving to Eureka, Calif. where Roger worked as an engineer on the whaling vessel "Dennis Gayle". They returned to the Bay Area and settled in Walnut Creek in 1951, much to the chagrin of our grandfather who thought Walnut Creek was in the "sticks."
Carmen was a devoted homemaker, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She very much loved her home and where she lived and took great pride in being fiercely and defiantly independent. She loved family, reading, history, politics, and sightseeing. She cherished the memories of traveling and camping in their trailer, and in recent years she enjoyed researching the family genealogy and finding the "skeletons in the closet."
Carmen was one of the very last original owners living in her Walnut Creek home for over 60 years on the hill above Parkmead. She had many friends in the neighborhood and she still went to lunch regularly with two lifelong friends from what was often described as a very special neighborhood.
There will be a private family memorial with her ashes being scattered near Inverness so she can be reunited with the love of her life that stole her heart so long ago.
She was preceded in death by husband Roger Hanson in 1981; sisters, Ann Stimatze, Violet Thomas, Goldie Green; brothers, David, Lowel, and Earl Hardie.
She is survived by her three sons Terry, Reno, Nevada, Kim, Walnut Creek, Calif., Denny, and wife, Vicki, Concord, Calif.; six grandchildren Tyler, Kirk and wife, Stacy, Cameron, Kyle, Eryn and Ellis; great grandson Owen; Sister Merrit McNamee, Pearl, Miss.; and many nieces and nephews.
