Margaret Hansell Obituary
Margaret Maves Hansell Oct. 6, 1944 - Jun. 10, 2013 Resident of Walnut Creek Margy was a 40-year resident of Walnut Creek. She was born in Vermont, raised in New Jersey, and graduated from Earlham College in 1966. She earned a Masters degree in Education of the Deaf at Smith College and taught at Clark School for the Deaf in Northampton, MA. Several years after arriving in Walnut Creek in 1972, she was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, and in response to the news, proceeded to earn a law degree from Golden Gate University and practice law for several years. She was active in the Walnut Creek League of Women Voters, served for a time as president of Grace Presbyterian cooperative preschool in Walnut Creek, and for more than a decade, led the Bay Area chapter of the National Parkinson's Foundation and the American Parkinson's Disease Association. She also was involved in founding the California Young Onset Parkinson's Support Group, and lobbied Congress for increased funding for Parkinson's research. After Margy and her husband moved to Vermont to be closer to family, she continued to be a community organizer to the end. Margy's hobbies included reading, birdwatching, and camping. She died peacefully of complications from her long battle with Parkinson's. She is survived by her husband Allan Hansell; son and daughter-in-law Seth and Lynn Bernstein Hansell and granddaughter Arwen; and daughter Shana Hansell and grandson Oliver. Donations can be made to the Parkinson's Network of Mt. Diablo, P.O. Box 3127, Walnut Creek, CA 94598.
