Kathleen "Kathy" Berner Obituary
Kathleen "Kathy" Berner
Resident of San Ramon
Our Kathy passed away peacefully at home with her family at her bedside on Wednesday, August 21, 2013. Kathy lost her 3 year battle with cancer at 60 years young.
Kathy was born in Belleville, IL and was an accomplished swimmer and diver in her high school years, competing at the state level. Kathy met her husband Wayne while attending Lewis University, completing her undergraduate degree in nursing. She completed her Master of Science in Nursing from Loyola University in 1985. Kathy later became a CCRN and began to pursue her true passion which was teaching, following in the footsteps of her mother. Kathy taught nursing at Lewis University, the University of Massachusetts and at the University of San Francisco.
Kathy did not stop teaching in the classroom. One of her passions was Girl Scouting. Kathy served as leader for Troop 277 and was involved at all levels of the Girl Scouts, as her daughter progressed through the program and beyond. She later became involved with the Troop Leader Training Program for Oakland and she received her "Green Angel" Award in April of 2005. Kathy was also involved in the San Ramon Aquacats swimming program and served as the President from 1998 to 2001. Kathy was also involved with the San Ramon Park District, serving as a Park District Commissioner for 5 years. Kathy believed in being involved in your community and she was a woman of action.
Kathy is survived by her husband of 37 years Wayne Berner, son Nathan Berner and his wife Joanna, her daughter Andi Berner, her brother Richard Cooper and his wife Carolyn, her brother Gary Cooper and his wife Kathy and her father Charles Cooper. Kathy was preceded in death by her mother Jeanne Cooper, in 2011.
A vigil will be held starting at 5pm on Aug.28th at Graham-Hitch Mortuary in Pleasanton; funeral services will be Aug. 29th at 10am at St. Raymond's Church at 10am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent in Kathy's name to the Girl Scouts of America.
