Native and lifelong resident of Pleasanton, Anthony Angelo Cavestri passed away early Veteran's Day morning November 11, 2013.
"Tony" was born in Pleasanton on November 29, 1923. He attended local schools and was a 1942 graduate of Amador High School. He joined the Air Force that same year and became a member of a B-24 bomber crew stationed in England during WWII. As the belly gunner in the crew, Tony's plane was shot down during a bombing run over occupied France. He was able to parachute safely and spent the next three months hiding from the German Army, with the help of the French Underground. He was eventually rescued as the Allied Forces liberated France. He was wounded and received the Purple Heart for his service.
After the war he returned home to Pleasanton and married his girlfriend Marjorie McDonald on September 12, 1947. They settled in and began a great family in Pleasanton. In 1952, they moved to their new house on Walnut Drive, aka Candy Cane Lane, and together with Marge, enjoyed creating Christmas displays every year.
Tony was a well-known figure around town, having worked for many years at Hagstroms, P&X, and Safeway, all on Main Street. He was also a member of the Pleasanton Police Reserves. After he left Safeway, he spent 22½ years with the City of Pleasanton Street Department until he retired in 1989. He was also a 65 year member of the VFW Post and the American Legion. He loved the City of Pleasanton and faithfully watched the city council meetings on TV every Tuesday night.
He was a dedicated husband, father, and he was a beloved Grandpa, who will be deeply missed.
Tony is preceded in death by his wife Marjorie, and his daughter, Teri Allen of Seaside, Oregon. He is survived by his son Bruce, his son-in-law Vaughn Allen, and grandchildren Brian Allen, Beth Allen, and Taylor Cavestri.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society and/or the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Tuesday November 19, 2013, at 1:00pm with the funeral service following at 2:00pm, at Graham-Hitch Mortuary.
In addition, a Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held on Thursday November 21, 2013, from 2-5:00pm at the Veterans Memorial Building in Pleasanton.
