Richard Cornelius Brouws Obituary
Richard Cornelius Brouws
June 25, 1922 - March 12, 2014
Resident of Concord
Richard Brouws passed away peacefully at the age of 91. He was born in San Francisco and lived in Concord since 1979. Richard was a Navy veteran who served in World War II and the Korean conflict. He was proud of his accomplishments as a deep-sea Navy diver, where he was a demolition and reclamation expert in the Philippines.
Baseball was a passion, and in the late 1940's after his initial discharge from the Navy, he briefly pursued a career as a semi-pro baseball pitcher – a career that was cut short by a broken arm. After his final discharge from the Navy he went into civil service, working at Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard for over 30 years. He spent part of his active retirement as a chapter president and district vice president of NARFE (National Assn. of Retired Federal Employees) advocating for the rights of fellow retirees. Until he became disabled in his later years, Richard was an avid golfer and amateur fuchsia grower. In addition, he and his wife Annette enjoyed travel, including extensive driving trips across the U.S., and several overseas trips.
Richard is survived by his loving wife Annette, son Jeffrey Brouws (wife Wendy Burton Brouws), daughter Linda Conklin, and stepdaughters Maureen Wilson, Cathy Gonzales (Jerry), and Julie Nicholson (Tom). Nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive him. He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters.
Per Richard's request, there will be no services. A scattering of his ashes at sea is scheduled at a later time. Donations in his name can be made to St. Anthony Foundation, 150 Golden Gate Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94102.
