Paul Phillips Obituary

Paul D. Phillips
Mar. 8, 1947 - Jan. 4, 2016
Resident of Antioch
In memory of a Vietnam Veteran Paul D. Phillips
Paul D. Phillips. Sr., of Antioch , 68, died on Monday, January 4, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. He died from illnesses caused by exposure from Agent Orange. He was born on March 8th, l947 to Willard and Elizabeth Phillips. He grew up in Concord, Ca, graduated from Mt. Diablo High School in 1965. Paul married Janet Holtrop on August 12, 1967 just three days after
he had received his draft papers to enter into the U.S. Army for the Vietnam War. During the war he served as a Sixth US Army Stock Central Cen Psf in Camp Eagle. It was during this tour in Vietnam that he was repeatedly exposed to Agent Orange defoliant that took his life some 45 years later. He was honorably discharged with full honors in 1970. Having received the National
Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. After returning home from service, Paul, worked for Lucky, mostly in Martinez, Ca., for over 35 years as a clergyman. During his later years, Paul was an avid traveler, having traveled all over the world researching his family history. Most of this was accomplished when he was blind. Paul also had a love for music and animals, especially a love for his dog Brady and Beau. He
was also a sports fan, cheering devotedly on the N.Y. Jets and the Oakland A's. During the last few years of his illness, Paul maintained his lifetime sense of humor, zest for life, and his amazing resilience. He was a stubborn man who had a strong will to live. Even in his last days, Paul gave much love and humor to his friends and family.
Paul is survived by his loving children Nancy, Paul Jr (Kim), Karen (Sterling), Stephanie, and David (Carressa) and his adorable Sabrina, Dylan Hernandez, Elliot Cano, Audrey, and McKenzie. He is also survived by his loyal dog Brady. A Memorial gathering will be held on January 16th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Jesus
Christ of Latter Day Saints Church 3015 Rio Grande Dr. Antioch. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Wounded Warrior Project in honor of Paul Phillips.

I miss you so much Dad! I'll never forget the times when just the two of us would go see Broadway shows because mom didn't care for them. I remember the scene in Phantom of the Opera where the daughter is crying at her father's grave and I couldn't stop crying because that was my worst fear - losing you. Now that fear has become a reality and all I want is to be with you again. To have you at home with Brady and your famous laundry basket. I wish the whole world could know of you and what an awesome dad you were!!! You were the dad who really wanted to take your five kids to Disneyland so for over a year you dug through garbage cans collecting recyclables to save money for the trip. You endured being called the garbage man by your coworkers because of it but you didn't care. Your kids came first and you were going to do whatever you had to to make our dream of Disneyland a reality. You were such a beautiful soul. So strong and independent and so very freakin stubborn!! If it weren't for you and your wish for me to succeed I probably wouldn't have become the lawyer that I became before becoming ill. Which makes me think of the time driving down James Donlon. We were talking about me being sick and I'll never forget what you said to me. You told me that the doctors said there was little chance I would survive because I was so sick with gastroparesis. You said your mind started to scramble because you wanted to leave this world before I did because you couldn't live without me. But here I am having to live without you. How can I do it Dad? You and I were so close and we had a bond like no other. Please dad watch over me and the rest of the family. We all miss you so much and we promise to always "be good" lol!! You will forever be in my heart until the day we are reunited in heaven! I love you Dad, your Beezy forever and always
