Gloria Emma Hughes

Gloria Emma (Linggi) Hughes of Corning, Calif. passed away on January 30, 2013 at Enloe Hospital in Chico, Calif. She was 88 years old.

Gloria was born on September 23, 1924 in Wheatland, Calif. She was raised in Wheatland until her family moved to Sacramento at the age of six.

Gloria is preceded in death by her parents Carl and Emma Linggi and her husband Robert T. Hughes in 2002. She is survived by her son, Gary S. Hughes and wife Donna Hughes of Olympia, Wash.; daughter, Kathleen A. Choy and husband Wayne Choy of Corning, Calif. She leaves behind eight grandchildren: Justin Morgan, Blaine Morgan, Richard Morgan, Brandon Hughes, Sherie Kathleen Smith, Shanna Hendrickson, Amanda Hughes and Jessica Westfall. Gloria is also survived by ten great-grandchildren.

Gloria attended Sacramento Junior College and worked at the State of California Franchise Tax Division thereafter. She Was a Pepperette in High School and a Red Cross Hostess (USO) for WWII soldiers. Gloria married Bob Hughes and they lived throughout California before settling in Corning, CA.

Gloria enjoyed reading, hiking, traveling, camping and boating. She loved the sun and enjoyed nature, saying she and Bob's favorite place was Yosemite National Park. She painted lovely landscapes and knitted and crocheted beautifully. She was active in the Friends of the Library and the Corning Ladies' Society.

Gloria was known for her love of correspondence with her family and many friends - her letters were cherished by all. She was a generous spirit who not once forgot a birthday.

Gloria had a wonderful sense of humor and when asked how she wanted people to remember her replied "Darned if I know, that's up to them!"

Gloria's viewing will take place at Hall Brothers Mortuary in Corning on Friday, February 8, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Memorial services will be held at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Corning, on Saturday February 9, 2012 at 1 p.m.
