Garreth Brook Schaad, 81, of Dunnigan, Calif. passed away on Sunday Feb. 2, 2014.|
Gary was born to the late Elbert and Hagar Schaad on February 23, 1932, in Berkeley; Calif. Gary attended local schools and graduated from Pierce High School in 1950. After completing 1 year at the University of California Davis, he enlisted in the US Navy responding to the Korean Conflict. Upon completion of electronics training, he was stationed at Marigold Radar Station in Hawaii. There he married his high school sweetheart, Marlene M. Bailey on November 26, 1952. Their eldest son, Daryl (Jenifer) was born while stationed in Hawaii in 1954. Upon Honorable Discharge, Gary returned to farm with his father in Dunnigan as a fourth generation member in the family's farming operation. His family was completed with a daughter, Cheryl and another son, David (Danielle).
Besides his family, Gary's greatest contributions were in securing adequate surface irrigation water to the farmers on the Westside of the Sacramento Valley and the preservation of agricultural lands. He was a founding board member and President of the Colusa Drain Mutual Water Company, serving on the board from 1987 through 2011. He also served on the Dunnigan Water District for 28 years, retiring as Board President in 2013 and on the Tehama-Colusa Canal Authority Board of Directors for 9 years and was the Board's Vice-President at the time of his retirement also in 2013.
Gary was a member of the Dunnigan School District at the time the Pierce Joint Unified School District was formed and continued serving for an additional 13 years. He was a trustee of the Union Church of Dunnigan and a member of the Arbuckle Methodist Church at the time of his death.
His sister, Marlies Schaad Kennelly and parents predeceased him along with his Beloved Grand-Daughter Lauren. He is survived by his loving wife, Marlene, of 61 years, his three children, five grandchildren and one great-grand daughter.
Graveside services are scheduled for Feb. 10, 2014 at 11 a.m. at College City Cemetery.
