Laurence Edward Wragg Obituary

Dr. Laurence Edward Wragg, born August 12, 1921 in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada to Mary Jane Houseman and Thomas Wragg, passed away on June 28, 2018 in Chico, CA. "Laur" as he was known by his four siblings, was 96.

While he was still an infant, the Wragg family moved to 281 Jarvis Street in Oshawa, Ontario. It was here, from a young age, that Dr. Wragg's interest in science and taxidermy blossomed and would lead to a career in pedagogy and anatomy.

After earning a bachelor's degree from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, he began his career as the only teacher in a one room elementary schoolhouse in rural Ontario. Determined to dedicate his life to teaching, he furthered his academic career at the University of Toronto where he earned a master's degree, followed by a Ph. D in Anatomy from the University of Wisconsin. These achievements led to his first University appointment as Assistant of Anatomy at the University of Texas in Houston in 1956.

While in Texas he accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Anatomy at Northwestern, Univ. Dental School in Chicago, Illinois in 1963. At Northwestern he served as Assistant Professor of Anatomy while earning a Medical Degree and making a series of teaching films for Cine Pro-sector -- a forerunner to computer videos. These films, one of his many academic publications, were circulated to medical schools throughout the country and are still in digital use today.

In 1971 after completing a residency program in General Practice in Martinez, CA., he went into Private Practice in Colusa, CA. In 1986 he became Medical Director of Student Health at C.S.U. Stanislaus.

'Larry' (as he was also known) enjoyed a life-long love affair with anything sweet. He loved doing his daily crossword puzzles and reading the newspaper. He was very active and enjoyed square dancing, traveling the world and spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his brother David Wragg of Canada; children Deborah Rich of Truckee, CA, Cathey Wragg of Santa Rosa, CA, Trent Wragg of Sacramento, CA, Darinda Stout (Robert) of Chico, CA, Martin Wragg (Wendy) of Madera, CA and Sandford Wragg of Rancho Cordova, CA; grandchildren Kellee, Nathan (Crystal), Krista (Bill), Jordan, Alexandria and Hunter; and great grandchildren Devon, Willow, Dakota, and Kaden, and several nieces and nephews in Canada.

The family of Dr. Wragg would like to thank Dana McNabb and the kind-hearted staff at Prestige Assisted Living in Chico, CA as well as Vashty Kyle of Feather River Hospital in Paradise, CA.
