COSHOCTON: Debra (Larr) Stiers, 64, of Coshocton, died Friday, January 6, 2012, at Ohio State Medical Center in Columbus.
Debby was born May 1, 1947, in Coshocton to Ronald and Anne Larr. She graduated from Coshocton High School in 1965 and Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich., where she studied for a career in stenography.
Her work took her inside the courtrooms of Ohio and spurred an interest in current events and crime news she carried with her throughout her life.
She built her own business and became a national leader in closed-captioning for the hearing impaired, spending the latter part of her career helping deaf students pursue their dreams of higher education at Ohio State University.
She raised three beautiful daughters, Shelley (Bob) Batchelor of Coshocton; Amy (Craig) Althauser of Holton, Kan., and Darcy (Matt) Galnor of Jacksonville, Fla. Debby also gained a fourth daughter through marriage, Mickie (Jason) Stiers. She cherished her time with her family, especially her eight grandchildren who knew her as "Hunny."
She loved all sorts of animals and it's tough to come up with a domesticated animal she didn't have as a pet at one time or another.
She enjoyed knitting, University of Michigan football and never grew tired of laughter and ice cream.
She was extremely proud of her father's military service in World War II and the Korean conflict and was generous in her support of veterans' causes. She had a particular interest in POW/MIA veterans from the Vietnam War, servicemen she felt were under appreciated in our society.
She is survived by her husband, Michael Stiers, whose love and care for her knew no conditions nor limits.
In addition to her daughters and husband, she is survived by her sister Denny Larr and nephew Taylor Larr of Powell, Ohio; grandchildren Joe and Ben Batchelor of Coshocton, Riley and Sydney Althauser of Holton, Kan., Anna and Claire Galnor of Jacksonville, Fla., Ashley and Riley Shaw of Columbus; and her beloved dog Tally.
In addition to her parents, Debby is preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Virginia E. Stiers.
A visitation will be held in the Chapel of the Given-Dawson Funeral Home on Monday, January 9, 2012 from 4-6PM, and a memorial service will be held following the visitation starting at 6:00PM
In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting donations be made to Health Services of Coshocton County, P.O. Box 1284, Coshocton, OH 43812.
