James L. Allen

COSHOCTON: James L. "Red" Allen, age 82, passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2013 at Autumn Health Care following a long battle with Alzheimer's. Jim was born in New Lexington, Ohio on March 10, 1931 to the late Cecil and Audrey (Patterson) Allen. He married Evelyn June Poland Barker in April 1954, who preceded him in death in 1971. He married Betty Courtright Knicely in July 1973, who survives.

Jim served two years in the US Army with the 13th Helicopter Co. Transportation Corp. He retired from Ohio Bell after 29 years of service. He was a member of Prairie Chapel United Methodist Church, where he spent several years as a Sunday School teacher. Jim enjoyed walking, spending time outdoors, restoring cars, watching NASCAR, and spending time with his family. Jim and Betty enjoyed the 17 winters they spent together in Mt. Dora, Florida.

In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by sons, Chuck (Theresa) Allen, and Christopher (Tina) Allen; daughters, Janie (Brad) Sarchet, and Lisa (Brian) Davis; step-son, Robert (Mary) Knicely; step-daughter, Carol (Lynn) Mikesell; grandchildren, Jodi Hedrick Nash, Jon Hedrick, Chloe, Carly and Cassie Davis, Sarah, Rachel, Luke and Leah Allen, and Joel and Joey Sarchet; step grandchildren, Kurt and Kyle Knicely, Kristy McCormick, Keri Ames, and Michael Moran; great-grandchildren, Walter and Ellie; step great grandchildren, Isabella, Carter, Brice, Kenzie, Austin, Nathan and Abby; brother, Jack Allen; sister, Carolyn Smith; half-brothers, Bill Orr and Edward Orr; and half-sister, Linda Popham. In addition to his parents, Jim is preceded in death by son, David Allen; step-granddaughter, Amber Johnson; brother, Donald Allen; and sister, Margaret Atkinson.

The funeral service will be held in the Chapel of Given-Dawson Funeral Home Friday, January 3, 2014 at 11:00 am with Pastor Dail Parrish officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie Chapel Cemetery, where the Coshocton Co. Veterans Council will conduct graveside military rites. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, January 2, 2014 from 4:00-7:00 pm, and one hour prior to the service.
